Portfolio 2 - SVA

In essay writing, grammar is always the essence of a flawless assignment. Despite having valid points and outstanding vocabulary usage, minor grammatical mistakes can ruin an otherwise beautiful piece of essay. One of the most common grammar mistake made by me is the subject-verb-agreement. Subject-verb-agreement is to know whether the subject is singular or plural and recognising a singular or plural verb. There are several points to take note for self improvement in this area.

Firstly, sometimes the pronoun is the subject of a verb in the middle of the sentence. The pronoun becomes singular or plural according to the noun directly in front of them. Thus, we will have to use the corresponding verb for the noun.

Secondly, dealing with words that indicate portions of an item, we need to look at the noun in the phrase to determine whether to use a singular or plural verb. If the object of the preposition is singular, a singular verb will be used and vice versa. In short, the verb that we use need to correspond to the noun instead of the portions stated.

Last but not least, in certain cases, the subject is separated from the verb in a sentence. In such cases, we have to ignore the expressions that separate the subject and the verb in order to determine a singular or plural verb is to be used. Thus, we have to remember the subject we have written at the beginning of the sentence to avoid such mistake.

In conclusion, we have to be careful when dealing with such grammatical mistakes. We have to take note on the subject or the noun that we are writing to implement the correct verb use. Such skills will take time to adopt through practices to achieve a good writing habit.

There is no doubt about grammar is the asset of a perfect composition. In fact, an essay without grammar error can be classified as a higher level. I think grammar mistakes are made because not only people lack of inability of using grammar but sometimes they may also skip the revising section. Therefore, it is very necessary to be very careful and patient in composing a writing to avoid making unintentional mistakes. And I agree with Terence that practising usually can help improve using of correct grammar and writing skills.

It is true besides focusing on using good vocabulary in essay writing, grammar too plays a very important role. Without correcting the grammar mistake, some readers might not be able to understand what the writer is trying to say. Besides that, grammar can help in the good organisation of writing an essay. One example will be the use of linking words where the essay can be structured into a few points making it more clear for the reader to understand. In short, to write a beautiful essay, grammar must not be neglected.

Terence has made a very good point when he said that “minor grammatical mistakes can ruin an otherwise beautiful piece of essay”, and I totally agreed with this statement. No matter how nice you structure your essay, no matter how strong of vocabulary you used in your essay or no matter how informative your essay is, as long as there is a simple grammatical error in your essay, your beautiful essay is ruin. It is because, it will give the reader an impression you cannot express yourself clearly. In this portfolio two, Terence has brought out the commonly make grammatical error, subject very agreement (SVA). He has clearly explained to the reader the point to take note in SVA. The use of transition word is also clear and concise in this essay.
